New system to prevent falls from height into holes in ground
Posted On: 17-09-2014
Two firms have worked to devise a new system to protect workers from falls from height into wells or chambers below the ground.

Scottish Water collaborated with access specialist firm Technocover to develop a four-part fall protection grid for access covers.

The Scottish firm was concerned about the risk of falls into pump chambers. The new system's hinged grids each work independently to allow easier removal and replacement of pumps and other maintenance tasks - while restricting the are of open chamber to prevent a worker falling through.

The units have been trialled at a number of Scottish Water sites over several months and the company is now set to adopt the four-part fall protection system on all access covers installed on new-build Scottish Water submersible pumping chambers.

LFI designs products to prevent falls through scaffolding hatches

As well as falls into holes in the ground, falls through scaffolding hatches are another risk to workers. LFI developed its esSGee range in response to this risk. The range includes a ladder hatch - to close off ladder access hatches where internal scaffold ladders are used - as well as the universal ladder clamp, scaff step and ladder gates for safety while working on scaffolding.
