Handy tips on avoiding slips, trips and falls in the workplace
Posted On: 15-04-2015
Did you know more than a third of all accidents reported to the Health and Safety Executive in the UK are due to slips, trips and falls – by employees and the general public – which costs employers dearly.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) estimates that each year, 40% of all accidents reported to the HSE are attributed to slips, trips and falls and cost employers around £512 million in lost production.

These hazards are also responsible for 50% of all reported injuries to members of the public in workplaces.
Some of the most common slips, trips and falls are due to:
  • Unsuitable floor surfaces
  • Wet/contaminated floors
  • Unsuitable footwear
  • Poor lighting
  • Obstructions in walkway
  • Uneven surfaces

How to avoid slips, trips and falls... advice from RoSPA

Employers should look at the following factors to help avoid slips, trips and falls in the workplace, according to RoSPA:

Contamination from oil or dust – especially spills or leaks onto floors
Footwear – slip-resistant is best when practical
Environment – poor lighting, noise and weather can all cause distractions which can lead to accidents
People – how do people deal with spills? Do they rush around? Do they wear safety equipment?
Housekeeping – clearing up stray wires, adequate storage and regular cleaning are all important
Design & maintenance – are floors properly fitted and repaired? Are stairs suitable?
