Fake Britain uncovers counterfeit ladders
Posted On: 17-12-2015

Shocking news was revealed on BBC’s Fake Britain (Broadcast 3rd Dec 2015), stating that there are great deals of ladders sold which claim to be compliant with the British and European Standards when in reality they do not meet these requirements.

The show explained how many reputable wholesalers and suppliers are often led to believe that the ladders and step ladders they are selling are in compliance with relevant standards and are therefore safe and fit for purpose.

The programme advised of several different cases and showed one example of a step ladder that was bought online and buckled on first use, which could have caused potentially life changing injuries. The user explained, "I could have broken my ankle and that would have been my livelihood gone."

Fake Britain requested a number of ladders, which claimed to meet the specific standards, be independently tested by the British Standards Institution (BSI). However, the results showed that they did not meet those specified standards.

The Ladder Association, which represents the leading manufacturers, suppliers and ladder training companies in the UK, is warning that these counterfeits could be extremely dangerous. Technical manager Dan Aers stated, “The position of the Association regarding fakes is quite clear. As an organisation committed to safety and best practice – with specialist committees contributing to the development of the national and European ladder product standards at the very heart of this issue – we condemn any product that is misleading labelled and all the more so when it subsequently fails to meet the relevant standards when independently tested.”

The Ladder Association warn that “to be compliant, a ladder must meet all the applicable requirements of the relevant standard. If it fails to do so, it should not be offered for sale or purchased.” They recommend that you ask the manufacturer importer for a certificate of compliance from an accredited, independent third party test organisation. After all, lives could be at risk, let alone livelihoods.”

They strongly believe that quality, reliability and safety should be the key priorities when choosing a ladder, and go on to state, “the risks associated with purchasing and using a deficient or unsafe product are potentially enormous, with far reaching consequences – not only for the user, but for everyone involved in the supply chain.”

Ladder and Fencing Industries (Newent) LTD are proud manufacturers of British ladders that conform with a range of standards including EN 131 and BS 2037/1129. You can find out more about our classifications here. Click here to discover our extensive range of products.
