The History of Ladders
Posted On: 01-02-2016

Ladders are often taken for granted as a handy tool that many of us frequently use, but a look into their history gives us reason to believe that they are more fascinating and much older than we may have thought.

Believe it or not, ladders go back much further than many of us of may have imagined. According to historians, ladders are thought to have been used more than 10,000 years ago in Europe, and a ladder features in a Mesolithic rock painting in the Spanish city of Valencia. Depicted in the painting are two people who are believed to be climbing the ladder to reach honey.

Another citation can be found in the bible, when Jacob is said to have dreamt about a ladder that stretched from heaven to earth. However, it was the ancient Egyptians and ancient Hebrews who are thought to be responsible for developing the ladder as we know it today.

Nowadays, it’s difficult to imagine that early ladders were made from plaited grass or bamboo, and the ancient Egyptians used a rope pulley system to haul materials up when constructing the pyramids.

As time went on, timber became a popular and sturdier alternative. These gave the possibility of the ladder being leant against a wall, which enabled further stability and more possibilities for workers. It is believed that ladders of this kind were sometimes used by rebels climbing high castle walls to gain entrance during times of rebellion. However, this method of entry often left rebels exposed to the chance of attack from castle guards and inhabitants.

In 1862, progress was made on the ladder front, as the step ladder was invented by John H Basley. He placed hinges on it so that it was possible to fold the ladder and store it away easily. Nowadays, step ladders are still seen as extremely useful tools, essential to many workers, and can be found in many homes too.

Today, there are many types of ladders, such as extension ladders, pole ladders, roof ladders, and step ladders, made from a range of materials including fibreglass, steel and aluminium, rope, and of course, timber is still a popular choice for many. There are also many more uses for ladders nowadays, and many of us have one at home. We use them for work in construction, shops, supermarkets, warehouses, when decorating, cleaning windows, saving people from burning buildings, mountain rescues, accessing our roofs, lofts and tree houses, and even for various sports activities.
